| Q: Is this a recreational league? A: No, this is a competitive league. Our purpose is not to teach our players the basics of the game such as how to pass or shoot the ball. Although most of our coaches do work on those skills, we try to prepare our players to run offensive and defensive sets to assist them in elevating their game. Q: My daughter is in the fourth grade. Can she compete in the PBL? A: We encourage only experienced fourth graders to join our league. They will be playing with sixth graders and need to be able to compete. We want your daughter to have a positive experience in the PBL and nobody enjoys not being competitive. However, with that stated, those girls who do join us in the fourth grade and stick with the league through the sixth grade, tend to be the ones that derive the greatest benefit. Q: How much playing time should I expect my daughter to get? A: Your daughter should expect to get an equal amount of playing time with her teammates during the regular season. Depending on game situations she could get slightly more or less than the others but overall it should be pretty equal. However, once our season-ending tournament begins it is entirely up to her coach as to how much playing time she receives. This is one reason we run a "fifth" quarter during all tournament games. Q: Is there a "fifth" quarter run prior to each game? A: Not during the regular season, only during our season ending tournament. Q: What should we expect to happen on your Skills Day? A: First of all, you will need to complete a registration form and a liability waiver for your daughter. If you have not yet paid your registration fee, we will need it that day. Yout daughter will then go through a series of stations designed to allow the coaches to assess her skill level. Q: How are the teams chosen? A: Our goal is to have as evenly matched teams as possible. Much like a professional draft, our coaches have a draft order and choose their own players. Our teams have virtually the same numbers of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders on each team. We also require the coaches to select a percentage of their teams from both Ohio and West Virginia. This ensures your daughter will be playing with girls from other schools. Q: Is my daughter allowed to choose a friend to be on her team? A: This decision is totally up to the league directors. We generally only allow sisters to play together on the same team. At times we do make allowances for players who travel from a far distance for transportation purposes, but those situations are scarce and a genuine hardship must be shown. Q: How will my daughter know what team she is on? A: A coach will choose your daughter during our draft immediately following our Skills Day on December 5th. She should receive a call from her new coach within the next day or two. Also, we list a roster of our teams on the PBL website shortly after the draft. Q: Will my daughter's team hold practices? A: This is totally up to her coach. However, virtually all teams hold practice sessions. Each team is limited during the regular season to a maximum of one practice per week with a limit of 2 hours maximum. There is no practice limit during the postseason. Once again this season there will be no practices allowed in the Williamstown Elementary School gym. Q: What day of the week will practices be held on? A: Due to limited gym availability, her coach may hold practice any day of the week. Q: Why doesn't my daughter's team practice as much as the other teams? A: Our coaches are volunteers. It is strictly up to them whether to practice or not. We emphasize that we are a competitive league and we offer that form of competition in the games played on Sunday. Q: What does my daughter receive for her league fee? A: She will receive a game jersey. The rest of the money goes towards paying the referees and the various league fees including scorebooks, basketballs, etc. Q: Is there an admission charge to the games? A: Yes. In the past we have not charged for entry to our games. We relied on donations to sustain the league, but that is no longer feasible. Faced with increasing the league fee for the players or charging admission, we chose to charge admission. We will charge $1.00 per person school age and up. |
